The role:

We are seeking a Business Development Manager / Director to join our talented team of designers and engineers, working on exciting new technology in the medical and scientific space. The Maddison consultancy continues to grow, and we are looking for somebody to drive forward our business plan, targeting a range of new and existing contacts. Who are we looking for?

We need someone with passion and drive, to develop new business and existing relationships. Although the role will involve travel, Maddison is based in West Sussex and a considerable amount of time will be spent there with the design team and senior management. A sound knowledge of the design development industry is essential, and the successful candidate is likely to have come from a design or engineering background. Experience or knowledge of medical / scientific technology would be an advantage.

Key responsibilities:
 • Identifying new prospective clients and unearthing new business opportunities
 • Building/developing existing client relationships and identifying opportunities for repeat business
 • Continuing to develop our sales pipeline and strategy
 • Working alongside our designers and engineers to prepare proposals
 • Pitching to clients
 • Keeping up-to-date with industry trends and the market
 • Attending industry and networking events
 • Liaising with clients throughout project delivery

Applications are invited for the position of Chair of Material and Design Innovation.

We are seeking to appoint an outstanding designer/maker to the post. The major remit of the role is to provide outward-facing strategic leadership in making and innovation by supporting the University’s strategic themes: influencing globally; contributing locally, maintaining and creating partnerships with creative industries. There will also be a requirement to be involved with enhancing learning and teaching initiatives within the School of Design and ECA more generally.

Person Specification

You will have a specialism in Jewellery and Silversmithing and particular expertise and interests in bridging digital technologies and traditional ways of making in order to develop new modes of thinking and practice from an inter-disciplinary perspective. You will have a level of digital expertise and be interested in leading digital technologies in the role. Key objectives for the successful appointee will be to help develop the School’s public research and innovation profile and increase research income.

Your record of recent work will be commensurate with an internationally recognised research profile for the 2020 REF. You should be able to demonstrate experience of leading research at the highest level including securing prestigious research grants. A record of successful supervision of research students and researchers is also essential.

In addition to making a major contribution to the School of Design, the successful applicant will play an active and collegiate role within the Edinburgh College of Art, the wider University and the external environment, both nationally and internationally.
